A neo-industrial era is upon us, one that is fundamentally and radically transforming how we produce energy, food, materials and other goods.
BIOMANUFACTURING
The industry of nature
Biomanufacturing leverages micro-organisms like yeast, bacteria, algae, fungi to produce molecules which are high-performance bio-alternatives to petrochemicals and animal-sourced products. Rather than breaking down resources, in an extractive fashion, it builds from the molecular level, harnessing nature’s inherent processes.
Precision fermentation, one of the core technologies for bio-manufacturing, allows to change the genetic code of these organisms to achieve specific outcomes — from enzymes and other animal-sourced proteins to lipids, vitamins, biologics and biosimilars — without relying on traditional agriculture or fossil sources of carbon.
When unlocked at scale, precision fermentation has the potential to revolutionize production, delivering sustainable and superior solutions across industries.
$1.2T
“Assuming industrial-scale build-out—we estimate that the market size could be between $700 billion and $1.2 trillion annually in 2040”
40%
“Nature Co-Design has the potential to disrupt whole value chains, potentially impacting 40% of global GDP, equivalent to more than $30T.”
60%
“60% of the world physical inputs could be made using biological means. This represents $2T-4T of annual direct economic potential globally in 2030-2040.”

CHALLENGES
Behind the fundamental issues of cost, scale and capacity there are four key challenges to precision fermentation
Biopharma cost structure
Precision Fermentation is dominated by biopharma, a low-volume, high-value, highly regulated industry, creating expensive cost structures unsuited to industrial applications at scale.
Laboratory focus & mindset
Value creation in biotech is lab-centric, small-scale and heavily academia-driven, making predicting organisms’ behaviour and yields in industrial conditions almost impossible.
Siloed steps
Fragmentation across design, scale-up, and manufacturing causes friction and inefficient processes, with high CAPEX and OPEX and a long time to market.
Inconsistent, noisy, and limited data hinders learning both through statistical analysis and through the use of AI and machine learning — creating problems when scaling up production.
Data bottlenecks

NATURE CO-DESIGN
The Era of
Nature Co-Design
For years, most companies have tried to engineer nature’s complexity, using brute-force methods and reductionist tools to manipulate biological systems. These approaches failed to scale, as they overlooked the intricate interdependencies of living organisms.
Instead of forcing nature into rigid frameworks, Arsenale's approach of nature co-design works with nature’s inherent complexity to enable scalable, industrial production in the lab.
At the heart of this shift is our proprietary Design@Scale AI, which solves the core challenge of the biomanufacturing industry: scaling production while dramatically reducing costs.
